The Landscape of Deception explores is an ongoing project started in 2017 until now, it is about my observation on how contexts can become blurred, especially regarding places with complex historical backgrounds marked by conflict. These are beautiful locations that sometimes hold very different stories beneath the surface. Behind their subtle and graceful appearance lie hidden, difficult histories that contrast sharply with what we see and expect. It is possible that this beauty was deliberately cultivated to veil these challenging pasts, perhaps by authorities or local communities, in an effort to divert attention from what really happened. One such chapter from Indonesia’s past involves a period when many innocent lives were lost, and the affected sites were kept distant from public awareness, often surrounded by discouraging narratives to prevent visitors. However, over time, these places have transformed. They have been opened up as tourist destinations, inviting people to experience them. The areas are now arranged in a tidy and well-maintained way, far removed from the somber atmosphere associated with their history. The difficult stories are rarely spoken of anymore, and gradually, people forget. Today, we may not even realize this. The elegance of these places often eases us into acceptance, so that we rarely question their deeper significance. This shows that beauty can sometimes also conceal and mislead us.
