Revisiting The Ianjo
4 min.
Single Channel Video,

The ianjo (comfort station) system was the Japanese military’s control over the sexual behaviour of its soldiers. In Indonesia alone, dozens of ianjo housed thousands of ianfu (comfort women) across the archipelago. However, this system of sexual slavery was never truly revealed, and this dark history seems to have been deliberately concealed by various political interests. This video illustrates that situation by projecting steam and fog in front of the screen, always obscuring the image behind it. When the steam and fog clear, a rape chamber once occupied by the ianfu is simultaneously revealed, along with their Japanese nicknames.
