Yogyakarta and Thailand have something in common, especially in their socio-political-cultural structure, as a society that is in the ‘in between‘ – between the legacy of monarchy and democracy, between feudal-traditional society and modern-democratic society, between traditional cultural practices and popular-industrial culture, between a society that still maintains mystical belief systems and cultural practices and rational practices. In the context of Yogyakarta, the manifestation of this ‘in-between’ condition can be seen in the mixing and how the symbols are jointly present in the landscape of Yogyakarta and the way of life of its people.
Ruang MES 56’s collective artwork, which uses a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach; language, literature, music, video, photography, and performative, seeks to trigger our awareness by questioning the elements of culture and belief systems practised by the community. The point of departure we choose is on some of the similarities that these two societies (Yogyakarta and Thailand) share.
